Periodi di marmo: arte verso l’inespressionismo
Haim Steinbach, Jan Vercruysse, Ettore Spalletti, Bertrand Lavier, Thomas Schütte, Marco Bagnoli, and Salvadori were the artists invited by Celant to take part in the exhibition Periodi di marmo. Arte verso l’inespressionismo, which he curated. The show, which opened to the public on September 2, 1989, was held in Palazzo di Città, Parco delle Terme at Acireale. As the title indicates, the theoretical assumption behind the event was the same as that of Unexpressionism. Art Beyond the Contemporary, which Celant further specified as “a decidedly rational and philosophical research which in its operation of analysis and critique of the entities set outside of itself can be conceived and taken in opposition to Neo-Expressionist statements and explosions.” . . . . The setup was developed in a dual perspective, consistent with the particular characteristics of the two locations. The spaces of Palazzo di Città hosted works “that display a dimension connected to a private and inner condition . . . here the works formed by the assembly of products in series or artificial images capable of challenging the industrialized habitat that surround every human being from an anthropological, scientific or magical viewpoint encounter a historical and architectural backdrop that allows those works to establish a dialogue and an exchange of energy.” Salvadori presented Triade, 1986 (1987), Anfora e modello, 1982 (1986), and L’osservatore non l’oggetto osservato, 1985. The gazebo in the Parco delle Terme, on the other hand, was conceived as the place of “collaboration” and of “sensitive respect for the territory of others,” where each artist “found a way to construct a work on site, building a dialogue with the others.” For this location Salvadori, reasoning on the figure of the triangle, created Verticale, 1989, a triangular form in iroko wood positioned like a “buttress” outside the gazebo structure, on which to place a lead work of the series Nel momento, “juxtaposed with a circular opening at the meeting point of the median lines in the body of the large triangle.”
