Going along the material
"In Salvadori’s folding of folds, the interweaving of tightening-relaxing, shrinking-expanding, compressing-exploding not only does not exclude the void, it presupposes it, and sets out to make it breathe. The operation is calculated and follows a plan, and yet, in the actual moment of pragmatic work, it is the material that suggests the form it is going to assume. Material is plastic energy, which not only holds within it, virtually, all the forms that it will be able to take on, but also actively proposes what will be the best form that, on each occasion, it is going to assume. The work of the smith, therefore, does nothing but go along, in the constant search for the right moment (kairos), with the spontaneous indications produced by the material itself. Not through the intellectualistic speculation of the purely mental but, in the first place, through the intelligence and sentience of the body and the hands, a reactively haptic body under construction, which makes space by itself and assumes the cadences of improvised music and dance, with which the plan drawn up in advance holds a dialogue in the course of the work."
