Self-observation in following a path
"L’osservatore si sposta osservandosi was explicitly connected with the act of seeing and linked to the concept of the triad that had already emerged in Janus. The verb 'to observe' utilized in its title (later modified to L’osservatore non l’oggetto osservato) conveys the sense and raison d’être of its form and opens up to range of meanings which can be drawn on to fully comprehend the philosophical aspect that underpins it. Just as for Modello, the work sprang from a method that to some extent resembled the approach of a scientist who is at one and the same time theorist, observer, and experimenter. An intuitive and logical procedure of which the artist himself was well aware. Speaking of L’osservatore si sposta osservandosi, he commented: 'The element of observation has been fundamental to the construction of the object. There was no loss of memory between one step and the next. All the elements were always carried along and in addition there was a factor of self-observation in following this path. Out of this came the tripod: the element of vision and observation'."
